INFERENCES STYLE What do we know about the protagonist, antagonist, and any minor characters? What is implied and what is directly stated? Think about character(s), setting, plot, and organization. How does the author’s word choice convey the tone or mood of the story? Do characters change or stay the same over the course of the story? In what ways does this story have symbolic or deeper meaning? What is the pace of the story? How does the author use sentence length and syntax to establish or change the pace? What is the main conflict, and how does it shape the story and character(s)? What is the main thematic topic/motif (i.e. love, hope, freedom) in the story? What is the author’s message about that motif? How does the author use sensory details in the piece? How do they help the reader to understand the character, plot, and/or theme? Whose story is this? What perspective does the author choose and how does it influence the plot? How do the opening and closing of the story impact the reader? Does the author use figurative language or literary devices? Where and why?
