Answers to FAQs:
-For our students in the STEM program, I highly recommend that you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot for this assignment. It is not required, but we will read this text in its entirety for both Honors 9th Literature and your science course this year, so choosing to read this book now will save you time later in the semester! If you choose not to read Henrietta Lacks for this assignment, please go ahead and secure your copy of the text as soon as possible.
-While there is technically no minimum length for your chosen text, note that you'll engage in in-depth analysis, so a short picture book or a book that has large font and is fewer than 100 pages will likely not lend itself to deep analysis, and, therefore, by choosing this book, you risk earning a low score on the assignment.
-The pre-course assessment will be an in-depth analysis of the structure, tone, and style of your selected book and its author. (See the Invitation to Notice section on the attached assignment document.) In order to earn a desirable score, you'll need to be very familiar with your book. We'll engage in practice activities leading up to the final assessment, so I encourage you to read your book as soon as possible. You will have limited time to read during class, so please plan to complete the majority of your reading on your own.
-Your in-class assessment will be administered approximately 2-3 weeks into the semester. You will learn the date of the assessment on the first day of school.
