Sample outline: Sentence 1: Claim statement: In the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter,” Roald Dahl conveys dramatic irony by the character to Mary killing her husband with a frozen leg of lamb and then feeding the murder weapon to the policemen investigating the crime. Sentence 2: First piece of evidence (quote) with a lead-in and citation: (Dahl par. 134). Sentences 3-4: Two sentences of interpretation connecting your evidence to your claim. Sentence 5: Second piece of evidence (quote) with a lead-in and citation: (Dahl par. 134). Sentences 6-7: Two sentences of interpretation connecting your evidence to your claim. Sentence 8: Concluding sentence in which you restate the claim (not word-for-word) and make a larger connection. Consider why an author would use dramatic irony. Think about its effect: Is it humorous? Does it create suspense? Prompt for “The Gift of the Magi”: How does the author develop the theme of “The Gift of the Magi”?
